I’m seeing more and more posts flying around recently that say you must reach a certain ‘magic’ number of followers before you can start selling and making money on social media.

You’ve probably had a few of those messages land in your own inbox?

Is there any truth in what they’re saying? Do you need to have 1,000, 10,000 or 100,000 followers before you can even think about selling on social media?

The short answer is…

NO! You do not need a certain number of followers before you can start selling on social media and using social to make more money in your business.

Those kinds of messages is usually designed to convince you to buy a product or service that will help you hit the magic number they say you need. They may even try to flatter you by saying they’ve looked at your fantastic content and can see it deserves much more attention than it is currently getting.

They are trying to induce the fear of missing out (FOMO) to make you believe that you cannot afford not to invest in their services.

Often they will tell you that the size of your audience is the social proof you need to be taken seriously by potential customers.

Yes, having a large following can bring with it an element of credibility or “social proof” but it is not the be all and end all. People aren’t going to buy from you purely because of how many people follow you. People buy because they have a want and/or a need for your products or services. That means they see the value in what you have to offer and they know, like and trust you enough to part with their money. That doesn’t come from the size of your audience; it comes from the substance of your content.

In fact, focusing too much on reaching a certain number of followers can do more harm than good in the long run.

When you focus on numbers alone you can end up with a whole load of random followers. Some of them may even be accounts that don’t actually have a real person behind them. Those type of followers is never going to buy from you.

What’s more, because you won’t receive meaningful engagement from those followers it will make it much harder for you to reach genuine followers who are interested in what you have to offer, since your engagement rate will look poor compared to your large audience size. As a result, this kind of short term social media growth can restrict your long term business growth.

I want you to know that it is entirely possible to make sales through social media and grow your business online without having thousands of followers! I see my clients doing it on a daily basis; some have, what might be considered as, big audiences and some have a smaller audience but what they all have is an engaged audience who actually want and need what they have to offer.

So, please, please, please spend less time worrying about how many followers you have and more time on getting your message right. You will be amazed at the results!
