For all the positives that social media brings to our lives, as business owners especially, it can also become a source of angst, stress and overwhelm.

I know that so many of you are finding social media difficult right now. You’re pouring time into creating content and trying to learn the best ways to use social media to help your business to grow. You’re fighting to get your posts seen and feeling the frustration as it becomes harder and harder to get eyes on your posts without paying for ads. You’re overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of content in your Newsfeed, worried about missing something and often finding yourself stuck in comparison.

I want you to know that it needn’t feel so difficult and there are steps that we can take to embrace the positive power of social media whilst protecting our own mindset, wellbeing and happiness.

Social media is designed to keep you hooked

Whichever social media platforms you’re using, they are all designed to keep you “on the platform” for as long as possible.

That’s why it’s so easy to log in to quickly check something and, before you know it, you’ve lost an hour of your time with nothing to show for it.

Too often we leave social media feeling worse than when we logged in, and that feeling can be amplified when you’re a busy business owner who feels the pressure to always be online but you are already fighting to keep all of the plates spinning in your business.

That’s got to change!

The first step is to recognize that social media is designed that way; it’s not your fault but you can take back control.

Use social media with purpose

If you want to make sure that the time you spend on social media is productive and leaves you feeling good, then you must start by taking responsibility.

Stop logging in for a quick check of the feed or to see what notifications you have. That’s how you end up falling down the rabbit hole and losing precious time.

Instead, log on with a purpose in mind.

For example, if your intention is to check your Facebook Page and respond to messages then be firm with yourself, stay focused and don’t wander over into the Newsfeed. You could even set a timer and commit to logging off once the time is up.

Not everything is as it appears

Aside from inadvertently losing time, comparison is the beast of social media.

Always be mindful of the fact that people edit their life’s and their businesses for public consumption. Most of the time, you are only seeing their best bits so please, please, please try not to compare yourself to anyone else.

Just because it looks like everyone else has their shit together and that this whole business thing is coming so easy to them, doesn’t mean they do!

We are all at different stages in our journey and most of us are just doing the best we can do and figuring it all out as we go along!

Getting stuck in comparison does it exactly that – it keeps you stuck. It impacts on your mindset and you end up wasting even more time and avoiding action because you’re investing in what other people are doing rather than focusing on your own business.

Don’t be afraid to hit unfollow

Whether it’s a page that you follow or even someone that you’re friends with on social media, if you are seeing posts that consistently make you feel crappy then hit that unfollow button!

It is your responsibility to take control of what you are allowing into your world.

There is no-one that you have to follow. If they aren’t adding value to your world then take them out of your feed and know that you are creating room for more of what does make you feel good.

If you take only one thing away from this article let it be this: YOU are the biggest asset in your business and it is your responsibility to look after that asset. Do not underestimate how important it is to put your happiness, mindset and wellbeing first in everything that you do – including the time you spend on social media.
