Social media isn’t just about broadcasting your message and hoping that it reaches the right people. Take some time to find out what’s going on in the platforms you’re using and look for opportunities for you to get involved with those communities. You might be surprised at what happens!

An unexpected and totally awesome opportunity came my way on Twitter recently. A fabulous business friend let me know about a Twitter competition that runs every Wednesday. Organised by British businesswoman, Jacqueline Gold CBE, Women on Wednesday (#WOW) celebrates the growing number of UK female entrepreneurs and businesswomen.

Each week, Jacqueline invites female entrepreneurs to tweet about their business with the #WOW hashtag. She then selects three winners, looking for businesses that are interesting, that have strong brand values and that she thinks have the potential to grow and succeed in their industry. She looks for quality products and services, well-designed websites and entrepreneurs who demonstrate good business acumen and who have spotted a gap in the market that meets the consumer’s needs.

It just so happened to be a Wednesday when I heard about the competition for the first time so I thought, why not! Here’s what I tweeted:

To my complete surprise, I was chosen as one of Jacqueline’s winners that week! After Jacqueline had announced the winners and retweeted my winning tweet to her 59,000 followers my account went crazy.

Here’s what Jacqueline has since sent to me explaining why she choose me as a #WOW winner:

“I loved seeing how Beckie has followed her passion to create her very own business, enabling her to share her expert knowledge and skills with others to help improve their business’ social strategy. Beckie’s drive and determination have laid a great foundation for her business and I can only predict good things going forward!”

Receiving recognition like this from such an inspiring businesswoman is amazing, to say the least, but what I’m even more excited about is the opportunity I now have to connect with other #WOW winners and receive support from Jacqueline.

The moral of the story?

If all you’re doing on Twitter (or any other platform for that matter) is scheduling posts so that you can set and forget then you might be missing out on some amazing business-building opportunities.
That’s not to say that you have to spend hours and hours there BUT even spending just 5-10 minutes a day actively spending time on each of the platforms you’re using and getting involved in the communities there (not to mention building your own community) is time well spent. Stay open to new opportunities and don’t be afraid to get involved!
